Essential Information

Online degrees in hotel management are available through associate's and bachelor's degree programs that take 2-4 years to complete. A few associate's and bachelor's degree programs in hotel management are offered online, but, more commonly, students interested in this field must take degrees in hospitality management or restaurant management and choose courses that focus on hotel management. Many programs offer all courses online for students to access at their own convenience, but some are in a hybrid format and combine online, on-campus and video conferences. A few programs call for students to gain practical experience in the industry during an internship.

An associate's degree takes about two years to complete. Courses may include front desk operations, hotel marketing and hotel maintenance. Students can often apply credits earned to a bachelor's degree program. In a four-year bachelor's degree program, students take basic courses in hotel management and may opt for more specialized courses such as food display and meeting planning.

Associate Degree in Hotel Management

Although online associate's degree programs in hotel management exist, restaurant management or hospitality management degree programs are more common. Students gain practical business, tourism and hospitality skills. They examine practical concepts in hospitality management, such as cost analysis and control, focusing on hotel and restaurant operations. Students must have at least a high school diploma.

Program Information and Requirements

Typically, the online associate's degree program in hotel management takes 2-3 years to complete through combinations of online and on-campus courses, videoconferencing courses and other distance learning formats. Students also complete a hospitality industry internship. By accessing courses through web-based educational servers, such as Blackboard, students can watch or listen to video or audio lectures, interact with other students and complete assignments online.

Students completing this online degree program need to have a working computer and reliable internet access. They may also need computer software programs, such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash.

Students must have a high school diploma or GED, although some programs may require higher education, such as an associate's degree or a certificate. Few online degree programs are available in hotel management, and more options may be available in related degrees, such as hospitality management.

Information and Requirements

Most online hotel management bachelor's degrees take four years to complete, but transfer students could complete a degree faster by applying previously earned credits. All courses are available completely online, though students may need to complete an internship in-person. Classes are available through a web-based educational server, which allows students to access the courses, listen to lectures and complete assignments completely on their own time. Students don't need to attend class at a specific time and can spend as much time on each lesson as necessary before moving to the next, within the confines of the completion time limit for the course.

In addition to a computer and reliable internet, the hotel management program may require specific software, including Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office and Windows Media Player. Students must also be able to print out assignments and have a CD player or burner.

Hotel Management Courses

Students completing the online bachelor's degree program in hotel management must complete general education courses or transfer the credits from a completed associate's degree. They also complete core courses in business, hospitality and tourism.

Whether setting out breakfast foods or catering an event, students need to know how to arrange food, so it looks tasty and is aesthetically pleasing. They learn how to arrange buffets, individual tables and plates.

Etiquette for Hospitality Management Professionals

Career Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2015, lodging managers made a median annual salary of $49,720 in 2015. Meeting, convention, and event planners made $46,840, and food service managers made $48,690. The demand for meeting, convention, and event planners is expected to increase 10% between 2014 and 2024, while the demand for lodging managers is projected to increase by 8% and food service managers is expected to increase by 5%.

Because online associate and bachelor's level degree programs in hotel management are not widely available, students may consider the option of majoring in hospitality or restaurant management, as these options focus on many of the same skills and share similar course content. At both educational levels, students will likely need to complete an internship.
