Essential Information

Associate degree programs in the humanities and liberal arts are available entirely online and feature web-based courses in topics such as English, history, art and psychology. Humanities programs prepare graduates for further study in a bachelor's degree program or for a wide variety of entry-level careers.

Associate's Degree in Humanities

Online humanities associate degree programs provide students with a broad range of instruction in the arts, sciences, languages and writing. Humanities programs are closely related to the liberal arts and sometimes the two titles are used interchangeably. Most programs require a minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent for admission.

Program Information and Requirements

These programs typically require two years of study and can be completed entirely through the Internet. Coursework is delivered, discussed and completed through message boards and e-mail via an online interface such as Blackboard.

List of Common Humanities Courses

Humanities courses cover a multitude of topics, including social and physical sciences, art, philosophy and English. Most programs contain foreign language, computer and math requirements; to bypass such classes, students must show general competency in each field through examination. Those who don't pass must complete a course in the subject.

English Composition and Literature

To understand the critical analysis of literature, students read novels and discuss issues such as symbolism and social reflection. Literary criticism, writing styles, methods of analysis and research skills are also discussed.

Environmental Science

This course explores interactions between the earth, humans and animals. Students gain an overview of the earth's environment, including its physical, geological, atmospheric and biological components. They also investigate the proper use of the earth's resources and common misuse of the environment.

Political Science

This course teaches the basics of American government, including the separation of powers, jurisdiction of the courts and the role of political parties. Students also compare worldwide governments and discuss the drawbacks and benefits of each system. They investigate the development of political philosophy, its alteration over the centuries and the status of current political thought.

Career Information for Graduates

Graduates are prepared to work in a number of fields, but may be especially well-suited for entry-level positions which require communications skills, such as customer service or sales. As of May 2018, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the median salary among all sales occupations and similar careers was $28,180.

Continuing Education Information

Those with an associate's degree in humanities can choose to continue their education and earn a bachelor's degree in humanities or a related field such as history, psychology or English. Typically, a bachelor's degree program requires four years of study. However, some or all credits earned in an associate's degree program may transfer to a bachelor's degree program, reducing the program to only two years. Bachelor's degree programs in the humanities are also available online.

Undergraduates who are looking for a broad liberal arts education may consider earning an online associate's degree in the humanities. Coursework is offered in a wide range of fields, so the degree provides a suitable educational foundation for many different bachelor's degree programs, and students who want to join the workforce immediately have the basic critical thinking and communication skills necessary for entry-level work in a variety of industries.
