Essential Information

Online doctoral programs in management science are available as a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Management Science and Operations Research or a Doctor of Business Administration with a concentration in a related topic in managerial science. Doctoral programs provide advanced theoretical knowledge in business decision-making, leadership and project management.

A small number of schools offer fully online Ph.D. programs in management science, but hybrid programs completed partially online and partially in person are more common. These Ph.D. programs typically require the applicant to hold a master's degree. Graduates of doctoral programs are usually qualified to teach at the university level.

Two other potential job titles in management science are operations research analyst and logistician. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), entry-level operations research analyst positions require a bachelor's degree, and entry-level logistician positions generally require an associate's or bachelor's degree. A master's degree is often the terminal degree for both of these careers, the BLS reported, so consider carefully whether a doctoral program is necessary for your career path.
