Essential Information

Master's degree programs in literacy teaching are commonly offered online. They are designed for students who already hold a teaching certificate with an undergraduate degree and desire to specialize in teaching reading and writing skills.

Many of these programs use a hybrid form where the majority of courses can be completed online, but some need to be completed on campus. Some programs incorporate student conferences and peer editing sessions online. Most programs include a practicum of working with students in a real classroom.

Earning this certification involves passing the Praxis II Reading Specialist examination. Students who complete an out-of-state online program should check with their state board of education to ensure that the program meets the requirements for reading specialist certification.

For those who desire a fully online program in a related field, a master's degree in curriculum and instruction with a focus on reading is also available.
