When it comes to studying medical sonography online, programs range from associate's degrees and certificates to bachelor's degrees. Students should consider their level of experience when selecting and applying, and whether or not they already have certification in the sonography field. We'll take a closer look at these considerations and highlight a few specific program options on offer.

How to Select an Online Medical Sonography School

Students considering online medical sonography schools must make their decision based on several key factors. There are several different degree options for diagnostic medical sonographers. While the only fully online degree options are associate's and bachelor's degrees that are designed for students who are already certified as diagnostic medical sonographers, students can find hybrid programs leading to degrees in this area at a few colleges. Students must then weigh the program level with the certification factors.

Program Level

Hybrid certificate, associate's and bachelor's degree options are available for those who have no experience in diagnostic medical sonography and wish to enter the profession. Students should select a program based on their current educational and professional qualifications.

Certification and Accreditation

Certification requirements include attending an accredited degree program and completing a required amount of supervised clinical practice. Students whose schedules do not permit full-time enrollment in an on-campus program should look for schools that provide hybrid options with online coursework and the option to complete clinical practice at a local site.

Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Online bachelor's degrees in diagnostic medical sonography are generally designed to give students who already have associate's degrees or certificates in diagnostic medical sonography the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree while still working full-time as a professional sonography technician. Prerequisites for entry into the program include proof that a student has already been certified as a diagnostic medical sonographer. Students take classes on topics related to sonography and complete a general education curriculum. Classes include:

  • Basic patient care
  • Doppler physics
  • Healthcare issues

Schools with Online Programs in Medical Sonography

Adventist University of Health Sciences offers a bachelor's degree program in diagnostic medical sonography for registered sonographers who have an associate's degree, certificate or diploma. It is a fully online program, covering topics such as proper procedures, patient education, working with patient records, and professional practices of sonography. The College of Healthcare Professions offers a hybrid associate's degree program in diagnostic medical sonography. The program's courses are available online, with the exception of some classroom instruction and hands-on clinical experiences. The course requirements for this degree include math, physics, anatomy, ultrasound technology and instrumentation, ethics, and medical terminology, among others. Courses on vascular, obstetrical, gynecological, and small parts sonography are available as well.

If you have no prior experience or certifications as a sonographer, you may want to consider associate's and certificate programs, or hybrid programs that lead to a bachelor's degree. If you are pursuing education to further your career, an online bachelor's degree may be a flexible way to increase your knowledge and skills as a sonographer.
