Online Courses for Orthopedic Technicians

Let's take a few minutes to explore some commonly offered online orthopedic technician courses.

  • A Health Care System Overview course discusses the history, evolution, and future of the health care system in the United States. Students will learn about different medical specialties and their role as an allied health professional. Topics include properly documenting care, aseptic techniques, safety practices, and standards for providing quality patient care.
  • Students in an Anatomy and Physiology course focus on the fundamental concepts of anatomy and physiology and learn the basics of human bodily systems, individual organs, and their structures. Focus is applied to identifying musculoskeletal components and their functions.
  • Interpersonal Communications and Patient Care courses prepare students to deal with patients and families in the medical setting in a way that is both hospitable and professional. This includes an overview of professional communication when dealing with sensitive information, treating patients with dignity and respect, and ensuring confidentiality. This course focuses on the orthopedic technician's specific role as part of a health care team and when caring for patients.
  • A Medical Terminology course helps students acquire a basic understanding of how medical terms are derived and focuses on the musculoskeletal system. Included is an overview of how roots, prefixes, and suffixes come together to form these words and how breaking down words into their component parts can help in determining meaning.
  • Students in a Human Biology course are taught the fundamentals of human anatomical structure and physiology. This course provides the groundwork for more advanced courses in anatomy and physiology. Students should have completed high school biology as a prerequisite for this course.
  • Medical Error Prevention courses introduce healthcare professionals to best practices that can be implemented in order to prevent medical errors, including those related to orthopedic technologies. Topics of particular interest for orthopedic technicians include documentation and communication strategies, since they must work closely with orthopedists when creating orthopedic devices.
  • A course in Older Adult Care provides an overview of the aging process and common medical treatments for elderly populations. It can be helpful for orthopedic technicians who create orthopedic devices for older adults, especially when they are responsible for explaining their functions to patients.

Program Information

Although fully online orthopedic technician training programs are rare, certain core courses may be offered online as part of a certificate or degree program in orthopedic technology. These courses introduce medical terminology and concepts, orient orthopedic technologists to their role as part of a health care team, and teach them how to care for patients. Coupled with on-campus courses more narrowly focused on orthopedic concepts and techniques, as well as hands-on supervised experience, online courses can help prepare students to take the National Association of Orthopedic Technologists (NAOT) certification exam. There are also some online continuing education courses that are relevant for orthopedic technicians.

Although orthopedic technicians must get hands-on training before they can start their careers, there are basic biomedical courses and continuing education options available in online formats.
