Only hybrid programs are generally available for biomedical equipment technicians due to the hands-on nature of clinical requirements, and choosing a program depends on whether you want a certificate or degree. Here we will explain what elements are part of each type of program and look at two schools that offer hybrid programs in the biomedical equipment technician field.

How to Select an Online Biomedical Equipment Technician School

Biomedical equipment technicians (BMETs) service and repair the medical equipment used in hospitals. Fully online education programs for biomedical equipment techs are not available due to the hands-on nature of the job and the delicacy of the equipment, but hybrid options do exist at the certificate, associate's degree and bachelor's degree level. Prospective students often choose their program based off of current education level, desired career position and the clinical requirements.

Award Level

Students with no previous education in this field can enroll in associate's or bachelor's degree programs in biomedical electronics or biomedical engineering technology; the bachelor's degree program is often used by individuals interested in learning to repair more sophisticated equipment or advance within their careers. For individuals who have already completed a degree program in a related field, such as electrical or electronics engineering technology, an online certificate program in biomedical electronics may be more appropriate.

Clinical Requirements

Because of the hands-on needs in repairing biomedical equipment, education programs in this field often require lab or clinical training. The hybrid programs allow students to complete the majority of the coursework over the Internet, while still requiring them to complete in-person training on campus or at an approved facility. Students may want to check with the schools under consideration to see how and where hands-on training must be completed.

Online Program Options for Biomedical Equipment Technicians

Online Associate of Science in Biomedical Engineering Technology

Biomedical engineering technology associate's degree programs focus on the repair of technological equipment used in medical settings. Hybrid programs are available from several schools that offer online courses in subjects such as:

  • Radiography systems
  • Survey of electronics
  • Human biology
  • Routing and switching fundamentals

Online Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering Technology

Online bachelor's degree programs in biomedical engineering technology are extremely rare, but they do exist. Some of these programs are called healthcare engineering technology. These are often hybrid programs that allow students to complete several classes online before attending campus for lab work and hands-on training. Students take courses such as:

  • Engineering economics
  • Introduction to radiography systems
  • Biomedical equipment systems
  • Statics and strength of material

Online Biomedical Electronics Certificate

Biomedical electronics certificate programs can be found as both fully online and partially online programs. These certificate programs typically require students to already have a degree or experience in a related field. Required courses often cover:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Computer circuits
  • Biomedical measurements
  • Biomedical electronics equipment operation

Schools with Online Biomedical Equipment Technician Programs

Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis offers a hybrid associate's degree program in biomedical engineering technology. The online learning portion of the program is on a platform called Oncourse and includes courses like biology and medical electronics. They also offer one of the few hybrid bachelor's degree programs in the same discipline, with most junior and senior level courses offered online. Students unable to travel to Indianapolis for the on-campus courses are permitted to find equivalent courses at their local universities. Owens Community College has an associate's-level program in biomedical electronics available. Sixty-four credits are required to earn the degree, and the program includes hybrid courses with on-campus education at the Toledo, Ohio, campus.

Hybrid programs offer students pursuing careers as biomedical equipment technicians the flexibility of taking certain courses fully or partially online. Some schools with distance learning programs may even allow students too far away to attend on-campus classes to transfer credits from local schools in order to earn associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees, or certificates.
