Online Schools for Aspiring Medical Equipment Technicians

Programs in biomedical equipment technology are not typically offered fully online - more often students complete hybrid programs. Such programs are offered by several public and private colleges at the associate and bachelor's levels.

Online programs for medical equipment technicians may require students to attend a portion of the training in person, but the rest of the material can be studied with an internet connection. Students can take stand-alone courses or pursue a degree in the process.

How to Select an Online Medical Equipment Technician School

Medical equipment technicians, also known as biomedical equipment technicians, maintain, operate, repair and build the technology used in hospitals, medical offices and clinics. Students must weigh the award level and program delivery when choosing the right school.

Award Level

An associate's degree is the most common level of training for medical equipment technicians. Bachelor's degree programs prepare students for administrative positions within the field. Graduates with an associate's or a bachelor's degree need at least two years of experience before they can apply for certification within the field. Certifications available include Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician, Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist and Radiology Equipment Specialists.

Program Delivery

Hybrid programs require students to spend at least part of the time on campus attending workshops and participating in hands-on laboratory training. However, a significant portion of the program is offered online, allowing students to follow lectures and watch seminars though virtual online learning platforms.

Online Programs in Clinical Laboratory Technology

Online Associate of Applied Science in Biomedical Equipment Technology

Associate degree programs in biomedical technology prepare students for technician-level occupations in medical equipment repair, upgrade and maintenance. Hands-on experience is gained through internship requirements incorporated into the program. The coursework includes not only liberal arts requirements, but also introductory courses in the field, such as:

  • Biomedical equipment and instrumentation
  • Solid state electronics
  • Medical terminology
  • Wire diagraming interpretation

Online Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology

A bachelor's degree program in biomedical engineering technology provides students with a strong base in laboratory technology and biological sciences. Students learn how to use laboratory tools to test biochemical, microbiological and chemical compounds. They use laboratory instruments to calculate, evaluate, record and transmit laboratory information. The program trains them to interpret technical and professional materials and data. Students also test and maintain laboratory equipment for laboratory procedures.

Each semester students in the program will participate in simulated online laboratory courses. Prior to completion of the program, students will also be expected to complete individual research. Students also take the following courses:

  • Biopotential measurements
  • Computer techniques in medical imaging
  • Engineering applications in medicine
  • Psychological variable in living systems
  • Signal processing

Schools with Online Medical Equipment Technician Programs

The Career Institute of Technology, based in Round Rock, Texas, awards a certificate after 400 hours of classwork. The interactive program lasts for six months, and teaches management, organizational and research skills. Students are required to complete 16 hours of online study each week and have the option of getting hands-on training at a hospital or with a medical equipment company.

Madisonville Community College in Kentucky offers an Associate in Applied Science for Biomedical Technology Systems, as well as a Certificate in Foundations in Biomedical Technology Networking Systems. All of the classes are offered online, focusing on the repair and maintenance of many different types of medical equipment and systems, but there are on-campus labs, either weekly or during a summer session, as well as a clinical experience requirement.

A Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Engineering Technology Management is available from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Many, but not all, of the courses are available online. Applicants to the program should have an associate's degree.

Students planning on pursuing an online medical technician program should be aware of the possible on-campus requirements for clinical classes and labs, but other courses in a degree program can be found completely online. Programs are available at the certificate, associate's and bachelor's levels.
