Programs in surgical technology can be taken as part of an associate degree or certificate program. These programs include a substantial hands-on clinical training component; students learn to handle surgical tools, prepare operation sites and sterilize surgical equipment. Individuals who complete these training programs may be eligible for industry certification, which may be necessary for employment.
During surgical technology courses, students will receive instruction about the following:
- Incision site preparation and sterilization
- Preparing supplies and instruments prior to surgery
- Procedures for sterile field maintenance
- Surgical team roles and communication
- Career options for surgical technologists
List of Courses
Surgical Technology Course
Students undertake lessons in surgical equipment sterilization, surgical equipment identification and surgical patient care. They discuss the various roles of operating room personnel and learn about the basics of microbiology, anesthesia and pharmacology as well as the legal and ethical concepts involved in the surgical field.
Medical Terminology Course
This class teaches the names, abbreviations, spellings and pronunciations of medical words. It also covers the roots, suffixes, prefixes and definitions of medical terms. Lessons address the identification of human anatomy parts as well as effective and professional communication.
Surgical Procedures Course
Prospective operating room technologists train to assist surgeons in the operating room during surgery. They examine surgical and safety procedures while obtaining hands-on practice. They also learn about the medications used during surgery, as well as pathology, anatomy, medical ethics and surgical equipment handling.
Anatomy and Physiology Course
Enrollees learn about the human anatomy and its various functions. Through a course in anatomy and physiology, they explore topics such as circulatory, urinary, reproductive, respiratory, musculoskeletal, neuroendocrine and integument systems. They also study tissue and cell functions.
A pharmacology course provides an overview of various prescription drugs and their uses. It covers medication dosage, side effects, drug administration and classification.
