Operating Room Technologist Course Information

Essential Information

Programs in surgical technology can be taken as part of an associate degree or certificate program. These programs include a substantial hands-on clinical training component; students learn to handle surgical tools, prepare operation sites and sterilize surgical equipment. Individuals who complete these training programs may be eligible for industry certification, which may be necessary for employment.

During surgical technology courses, students will receive instruction about the following:

  • Incision site preparation and sterilization
  • Preparing supplies and instruments prior to surgery
  • Procedures for sterile field maintenance
  • Surgical team roles and communication
  • Career options for surgical technologists
