Located in west Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania enrolls nearly 25,000 students in 16 undergraduate and graduate schools. The Wharton School of Business offers operations management studies through its Department of Operations and Information Management (OPIM). This subject can be found as an area of concentration within the school's bachelor's degree in economics program and its Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. A Ph.D. in Operations Management is also offered.
The Bachelor of Science in Economics program at the Wharton School of Business offers several concentrations, including operations management. Students can choose the general program consisting of four OPIM courses, or a designated track in operations management/management science. That concentration includes four courses: a foundation course in process management or management science, and three electives.
The MBA in Operations and Information Management program includes courses in operations strategy and process management, service operations management, operations performance analysis and retail supply chain management. The MBA core curriculum includes courses in leadership, analytical foundations and business fundamentals.
The Ph.D. in Operations Management/Operations Research program emphasizes research into real-life operations management problems in the public and private sectors. Students can complete this program in four years, with summer study. Candidates must earn 16 course credit units, complete a teacher development program and write and defend an original dissertation. In the summer of their first year, they must also write a publication-worthy paper and pass a qualifying exam.
