Professional Handyman Job Description

Professional handymen are general fix-it specialists who use problem-solving and technical skills to solve household maintenance problems. Handymen complete tasks that are not complex enough to require certified professionals, such as electricians, while not simple enough to do without relevant technical knowledge. Handymen may need to call on certified trade professionals when work becomes overtly complex.

Professional Handyman Duties

Handymen may be required to perform many different tasks associated with a client's request. Often the handyman meets with the client and learns what needs to be done. A handyman then discusses the way in which he or she will approach the project. A handyman may then provide the client with an approximation of the costs associated with the proposed project plan.

Home maintenance is a major duty for professional handymen. The tasks required to complete the client's project may force the handyman to crawl into cramped places, work on roofs, or toil outside in inclement weather. In addition, some projects may be complex and require the use of specialized tools or procedures.

Requirements for a Professional Handyman

Professional handymen usually do not need specialized training or education for employment or private practice. However, some complex tasks may require the use of specialized tools. Technical and community colleges offer adult learning programs that may help handymen acquire basic skills. These types of programs may focus on certification on a single topic or skill such as electrical, tiling or drywall installation.

Some states require a handyman to become licensed. While licensing is not necessarily required in all states for handymen, licensing can afford a professional handyman additional professional credibility. Licensing content varies from state to state and may consist of a test involving technical skills learned in a trade.

Depending on local and state regulations, handymen may need to be bonded or insured. These legal requirements focus on on-the-job injuries associated with private handymen. Handymen who perform work under a specific dollar amount determined by the state where the work is performed may be exempt from this requirement.

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

General maintenance and repair workers, including handymen, earned a mean annual salary of $43,790 in 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported. The BLS predicted that jobs for these workers would expand about as fast as average, from 2019-2029.

Becoming a handyman doesn't require any formal education, though many choose to pursue vocational courses to polish their general trade skills to perform household maintenance projects like room tiling, furnace repair and plumbing.
