Essential Information

Project management certificate programs provide a more focused course of study that can be completed in a shorter timespan, but do not traditionally qualify students for federal student aid. Students normally complete about 12 semester hours to earn an undergraduate certificate, and some classes may be offered via an online delivery system, such as downloadable video lectures and interactive discussion boards. Individuals who complete such a program might enhance their career prospects by taking professional development courses through related organizations.

Project Management Certificate Programs

Project management coursework tends to emphasize the practical application of such business concepts as strategic management, project-based teamwork and budget analysis. Students undertake lessons on how to effectively manage a company's human, physical and capital resources. Classes common to project management certificate programs include:

  • Organizational communications
  • Organizational theory and behavior
  • Managerial decision-making
  • Project planning
  • International management
  • Staffing organizations

Career Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not list project managers as an occupational classification distinct from management professionals in general. However, the BLS did report that information technology project manager positions were expected to grow 11% from 2018-2028. Management occupations in general were only predicted to increase 7%.

Continuing Education Information

Those who earn a project management certificate can use their training as a springboard to an undergraduate or graduate degree program in a related field. Professional organizations, such as the Project Management Institute, also provide a number of career development courses for those interested in advancing their professional credentials.

Those who wish to gain leadership skills, either to advance their current careers or enter the workforce with extra initiative, can do so by completing a short project management certificate program. These certificate programs teach students the basics of business and planning, and they can prepare students for a more advanced degree program.
