Richfield is located just south of downtown Minneapolis and west of St. Paul. In 2014, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population of Richfield at 36,179. Nearly 70 percent of the city's residents identified as white in 2010, with more than 18 percent identifying as Hispanic or Latino, over nine percent as black or African American and more than six percent as Asian.

Richfield's weather is traditionally cold in the winter and mild in the summer. Summer activities include swimming and boating on nearby lakes, while winters are ideal for ice fishing, ice skating and snowmobiling. The city government maintains numerous parks and a nature preserve with wetlands and walking trails.

Adler Graduate School, which enrolled 368 students as of Fall 2014, is the only not-for-profit postsecondary school in Richfield. This private school offers post-masters certificates and master's degrees psychology.

Students seeking an undergraduate education will find dozens of school options within 30 miles of Richfield. The University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, for example, was ranked the 69th best national university by U.S. News & World Report in 2016. Nearby is Macalester College, ranked the country's No. 23 liberal arts college. Hamline University, St. Catherine University and Bethel University, ranked by U.S. News as the 12th, 15th and 23rd best regional universities in the Midwest, respectively, also are other reasonably close options.

Two-year schools within a short commute of Richfield include Normandale Community College (in Bloomington), Minneapolis Community and Technical College, St. Paul College and Inver Hills Community College.
