Robotics Technologist Salary

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), electro-mechanical technicians earned a median annual salary of $53,340 in May 2015. The BLS classifies robotics technologists within this category. The lowest-paid ten percent earned around $33,580 or less, whereas the highest-paid ten percent earned around $84,520 or more. Wages varied according to industry and location. The highest paying positions, for example, were in the oil and gas extraction industry, which offered a mean wage of $80,220 per year. Washington was the highest paying state at $81,950 per year.

Robotics Technologist Responsibilities

Robotics technologists use their knowledge of electrical and electronic circuitry and mechanical engineering to develop robotic systems. This includes working closely beside engineers to design, test, improve, and manufacture automated mechanical equipment and its components. They may be responsible for installing and programming robotic systems as well as for troubleshooting malfunctions, repairing faulty devices, and performing preventative measures.

Robotics Technologist Outlook

Electro-mechanical technicians are expected to experience a one percent increase in employment from 2014-2024, according to the BLS. This lack of growth will be due largely to increased efficiency in the design and production of robotics machinery; however, it may be offset by a demand to replace technologists that leave the occupation. Technologists with associate's degrees or similar postsecondary training will benefit from greater employment opportunities.

Associate of Applied Science in Robotics Technology

Employers often prefer applicants with associate's degrees in robotics engineering. Such degree programs are offered by community colleges and technical institutions. Curricula generally focus on practical application of robotic engineering and prepare students for entry-level technologist positions. Courses may include robotic systems integration, microprocessors, programmable controllers, and automated systems applications. While both technical schools and community colleges offer two-year degrees, technical schools tend to lack the general education and theory instruction offered by community colleges.

Aspiring robotics technologists should first earn a degree in robotics technology, which will help prepare them for working with circuitry and mechanics. These professionals need to know how to troubleshoot robotic systems, make repairs when necessary and maintain equipment to prevent future breakdowns.
