An SQL server certificate program provides training in the implementation, management and analysis of SQL databases and servers as they exist in real-world business settings. Courses address query optimization, development concepts and SQL procedures. Programs may also cover the basics of setting up, administering and securing networks. Skilled SQL server professionals can pursue certification from Oracle and Microsoft. Instruction is available online in some instances. Applicants to the program will need a high school diploma or GED, as well as knowledge of programming and familiarity with relational databases.

Certificate holders have multiple opportunities to earn an SQL server certification. Oracle and a number of other vendors offer the 9i SQL certification examination. Microsoft offers SQL certification exams at three levels. Designations include the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS), Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) and Microsoft Certified Master (MCM). MCM requires passage of the MCITP, which requires passage of the MCTS.
