As the state capital of California, Sacramento boasted a population of about 495,234 in July 2016, according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. UC Davis Medical Center, the Corrections Department, the Disabled American Veterans, the Sacramento Bee and Sacramento State University are just a few of the major employers in the city of Sacramento as of 2018. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported an unemployment rate of 3.9% for the Sacramento-Arden Arcade-Roseville region as of March 2018. The BLS also reported an average hourly wage of $26.45 for all occupations in this region as of May 2017. Some of the higher hourly earners were management positions with $54.75 per hour, on average, and legal professions with $51.99.

According to California's Employment Development Department (EDD), the following ten occupations are among those expected to have the fastest job growth from 2014-2024 for the Sacramento area. All should see 46% growth or more. Some of these jobs require a master's degree, while others simply require a high school diploma or equivalent.
