Sanford, Maine, once served as a manufacturing center for textiles and was home to Goodall Mills, established in 1867 by Thomas Goodall.

Sanford had a population of 20,906 in the 2014 U.S. Census, and the median age of its residents is about 40 years. Nearly 95% of residents are white, and about 20% have at least a bachelor's degree. The median household income for Sanford is $44,123, based on 2010-2014 census data.

Sanford is close to about a dozen lakes or residents can drive about a half hour to get to the ocean. The city has several golf courses, hiking and biking trails, a baseball team and numerous parks. Antique stores are common here along with apple orchards and farms where residents and visitors can pick their own produce.
