School Selection Criteria

Some things to consider when looking into boat broker training programs:

  • Some associate's and bachelor's degree programs include internship opportunities, though students may want to review the job duties of each occupation when applying for an internship to ensure that it matches their interests.
  • To help gain experience in the boating industry, students may want to apply to programs located near large bodies of water as this allows for easy access to internship programs within the boating industry.
  • Students should confirm that the program they choose meets broker licensing requirements since some states, such as California, Florida and Maryland, require yacht brokers be licensed.
  • Some schools offer these programs completely online, but it's important that prospective students check that the school is accredited. Other schools may offer it in a hybrid format.

Certificate in Retail Sales or Retail Marketing

Certificate programs can be completed in a single semester. Some schools allow the completed credits to transfer to other retail-based certificate or associate's degree programs.

Associate's Degree in Retail Management

Retail management is sometimes offered as a specialization within a business management associate's degree program. These programs require general education courses in math and communications, in addition to the retail management curricula. Coursework generally combines business and management principles. Internship opportunities may be available at this level.

Bachelor's Degree in Sales or Sales Management

Individuals wishing to become managers many consider bachelor's degree programs. A 4-year program provides students with hands-on research and real-world experience in sales and marketing through workshops, projects and internships.

Although pursuit of a degree is not required to become a boat broker, it is beneficial to those who are interested in furthering their careers. A retail management degree, or any similar business management degree, is available at all undergraduate levels.
