Schools for Aspiring Sales Engineers: How to Choose

Students in sales engineer programs are individuals with technical backgrounds who learn to develop, market and sell the technology products of a company as well as explain how they function to the consumer. Bachelor's and master's degree programs in engineering are available across the U.S. that could prepare students to become sales engineers.

School Selection Criteria

Engineering programs are very common at 4-year colleges and universities. Students interested in a sales engineering degree may want to keep the following considerations in mind when selecting their program:

  • Schools with specialty options allow students with particular interests to pursue a degree in fields such as electrical, mechanical or computer engineering.
  • An online program could be helpful for students who are already employed or who live too far from a prospective engineering college.
  • Internships in sales environments can help students create real-world connections by gaining practical experience with a potential employer.

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering

Bachelor's degrees in engineering can be completed in four years and can qualify students to apply for positions as sales engineers. Projects and research in a student's chosen specialization, as well as an internship or industry work experience, may be required. Coursework often includes calculus, electronics, statistics, circuits, and physics.

Master's Degree in Engineering

Master's degree programs in engineering can be completed in two years and are typically designed for students who already hold a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Coursework at this level is typically flexible, reflecting the student's chosen specialization. A master's thesis may be required, as well as a final project. Students can choose from a number of specializations at the master's level, including electronic engineering, systems engineering, civil engineering, and software engineering.

A number of schools offer engineering degrees and certificates from the bachelor's to the doctoral level. Prospective students should look for programs that offer sales training and internship opportunities in addition to technical education.
