School Selection Criteria

Consider the following when selecting a strategic planning program:

  • In some cases, credits earned in a certificate program can transfer directly to a master's program, but this type of certificate program usually requires a bachelor's degree for admission.
  • Strategic planning concentration options within MBA programs may be available or as general programs offering a broader variety of courses in areas like finance, accounting and management.
  • Scheduling flexibility also may be important to employed students or those with family obligations; these students might consider programs that offer part-time, evening or weekend course options.
  • Students should be aware that the cost of certificate programs, even ones that offer similar curricula, can vary by thousands of dollars.

Certificate in Strategic Planning

Certificate programs in strategic planning can prepare students to work in multiple areas of the business world, including management, marketing, finance or human resources. Certificate programs usually can be completed in 2-3 semesters, but students interested in part-time scheduling might be permitted to take several years to finish.

MBA with a Concentration in Strategic Planning

Concentrations in strategic management are offered through MBA programs across the U.S. Applicants to MBA programs typically need an undergraduate degree and, if that degree isn't in business or a related field, they might have to complete extra graduate-level coursework prior to beginning their MBA studies.

Many business schools at colleges and universities offer training in strategic planning. While other levels of education may be offered the most common awards include certificates and MBAs.
