Essential Information

Although Scottish history degree programs are not available in the United States, students of history at the bachelor's and especially at the master's degree levels can tailor their programs to include courses in the history of Scotland. For instance, students in bachelor's degree programs can choose electives that will allow them to focus on Scotland's past. Similarly, master's programs allow students to focus on specific topics, such as Scottish immigration to the United States, the Jacobeans or even the history of golf. These programs also often offer study abroad options in Scotland. Some school also offer graduate certificates in Scottish history.

Application requirements vary by degree. For entrance into a master's program, applicants are required to have a bachelor's degree and GRE scores. A master's degree is subsequently required for entrance into a graduate certificate program.

Students pursuing the topic of Scottish history at the master's level may be required to prove proficiency in a foreign language, complete comprehensive exams, or produce a thesis.

Master's Degree in History

Students in graduate-level history programs research past events, and analyze and interpret information to shed light on past human interactions. Relevant degree programs may be found as a Master of Arts in History or a Master of Arts in European History. Some schools have partnerships with universities in Scotland that allow for year-long study abroad programs, where students are able to concentrate in Scottish history.

Graduate programs allow students to focus on areas of special interest, such as the migration of the Scottish diaspora after the highland clearances, or early modern European history.

The BLS reported that the median annual salary of a historian in 2015 was $55,800. During that time, state and local government had the highest level of employment for historians, according to the BLS.

Students who want to continue their education in Scottish history may apply to a university in Scotland to earn a Ph.D. in Scottish History. Occasional lectures and other events are sponsored by Scottish heritage organizations and sometimes include guest speakers on Scottish history and society.
