Essential Information

A scrub technician, also known as a surgical technician, surgical technologist or operating room technologist, assists surgeons and other surgical personnel before, during and after surgical procedures. Scrub technicians are responsible for preparing patients for surgery, transporting them to the operating room and sterilizing the operating room and surgical equipment. Coursework can be found at 2-year colleges at the associate degree level. Shorter-term certificates are also available. Surgical technicians should consider certification through the National Healthcare Association or the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting in order to better their chances of employment.

Introduction to Surgical Technology Course

An introductory course on surgical technology provides students with entry-level skills and knowledge of a scrub technician's duties. Students learn how to scrub in for surgeries as well as technological sciences, surgical pharmacology, anesthesia, endoscopy and microsurgery.

Perioperative Methods Course

An in-depth course focused on perioperative techniques, also known as peri-op care, allows students to gain knowledge on patient care before, during and after surgical procedures. Students learn how to dress wounds, identify infectious processes, practice aseptic techniques and maintain a sterilized environment for the patient.

Surgical Clinical Procedures Course

Students gain hands-on experience in a surgical clinical course where students apply their learned concepts and skills in a real-life setting under direct supervision from a clinical professional. Students demonstrate their abilities during surgical procedures by assisting and circulating in the operating room and perhaps even scrubbing in. Students also learn to handle surgical equipment during surgical procedures and provide post-op care to patients.

Surgical Pharmacology Course

A course in surgical pharmacology allows students to learn about general pharmacology and drug classifications. Students study common medications that are administered in surgical procedures, including dosage requirements, side effects and labeling.

Medical Terminology

Scrub technicians should know medical terms that are used in operating rooms and in surgical procedures. A course in medical terminology allows students to learn about the basic structure of medical words, their origins, prefixes, suffixes, roots, symbols, plurals, spelling, pronunciation and definition. The course allows students to build their vocabulary for the medical field and use it in a professional healthcare setting.

Anatomy and Physiology Course

An introductory course on anatomy and physiology provides students with a basic knowledge of the human body. This course helps students identify the body structures and their functions. Students learn about the reproductive, circulatory, urinary, digestive, musculoskeletal, lymphatic and respiratory systems.
