The city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, lies in the county of Manchaca on the Big Sioux River. The city of about 168,600 residents (as of 2014 U.S. census estimates) had a median household income of $52,607, compared to $50,338 for the rest of the state, based on 2010-2014 census data. Nearly 87% of residents identified themselves as white, from 2010 census data.

Sioux Falls puts on a variety of fairs and festivals throughout the year, including June's Festival of Cultures and July's Jazz and Blues Festival. Other attractions include the Old Minnehaha County Courthouse Museum, the Pettigrew Home and Museum, the Delbridge Museum of Natural History and the Great Plains Zoo. Downtown Sioux Falls is the historic center of the city and offers such cultural amenities as the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Fawick Park, where a replica of Michelangelo's 'David' stands.

Higher Education

Sioux Falls has 11 institutions of higher education. Southeast Technical Institute, a two-year technical and community college enrolling about 2,300 full-time students, is the largest postsecondary school in Sioux Falls. Augustana College, a private liberal arts school, has about 50 majors and specializations for its approximately 1,800 students, as of Fall 2014. It was ranked 2nd among regional colleges in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report in 2016.

Other Sioux Falls colleges and universities include the University of Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls Seminary, Sanford Medical Center and Kilian Community College.

Economy and Employment

The economy in Sioux Falls depends on manufacturing, retail trade, agribusiness, high-tech production, financial services, health care, education, local government and tourism. South Dakota's tax code and usury laws have turned the state into a magnet for large banks, and financial institutions with operations in the city include Wells Fargo, Capital One and First PREMIER Bank. Per economic data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of March 2016, about 33,000 people were employed in the sector of trade, transportation, and utilities. Education and health services employed 31,000 people, while financial activities employed over 16,000 people.
