A Sun Certified Professional (SCP) is an information technology (IT) professional who has passed an examination in Java programming language and other Sun technologies. The examination is given by Sun Microsystems. A certificate program in Java programming can be completed in one year or less and prepares students for this exam by teaching the skills necessary to develop Java applications for web environments as well as for individual clients. Students also learn how to use Java programming to develop software for wireless and mobile systems. Certificate programs in Java programming offered by community or technical schools are often entry-level and require you to have a basic familiarity with computer operating systems. Those certificate programs offered through the extension departments of universities are primarily designed for students who have professional experience or an academic background in programming. Therefore, there are no general education requirements, but students must have a basic knowledge of computer operating systems.

The Sun Microsystems subsidiary of the Oracle Corporation is the only entity to offer Sun certifications (www.sun.com). Although the company offers several different types of certifications, one of the most common forms is the Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP). Most students who complete a certificate program in Java programming are eligible to sit for the SCJP examination. The exams are offered at various testing sites around the country.
Master's degree programs are also available for graduates with Sun certification, including the Master of Science (M.S.) in Software Engineering, M.S. in Computer Information Systems or M.S. in Information Systems. These programs can prepare IT professionals for career advancement or additional study in a related field.
Students interested in Java programming can enroll in a Sun certification program to be more marketable or skilled as a computer programmer. Master's degree programs and other types of certifications are available as well.
