Team Building Courses and Classes Overview

Courses in team building differ greatly from one to the other. While some are theoretical in nature, others are hands-on and interactive. Some are available for those interested in becoming a team leader, while others exist for the motivation and improvement of an existing team.

List of Common Courses

Group Dynamics Course

A basic starting point for individuals interested in team building is group dynamics. This theory- and research-based course will focus on group function, roles and behavior. Theories of human interaction that affect group dynamics will be explored in order to provide further understanding of how teams develop and learn and accomplish goals. Other concepts that will be discussed include diverse teams, interpersonal communication and self-evaluation.

Theory of Team Building Course

Before working with teams hands-on, leaders must understand the fundamentals of what makes a team function effectively. This introductory course will focus on team building theories and factors to consider when grouping individuals together for the purpose of meeting a common goal. Essential problem solving and conflict management skills will be taught, and students will be able to determine if they are ready to begin building a team of their own.

Team Building Strategies and Leadership Course

Team building can refer to several things, and this course will focus on two: building a team from scratch and building morale once the team is in place. Those enrolled will learn about the attributes of an effective team, the stages of team development and how to create a team using assessment techniques. Teams are put in place to help reach a goal, so this course will also emphasize the importance of team members learning how to brainstorm and weigh options. Because the success of a team building effort depends on the team's leader, this course will also give students a lesson in leadership and how to influence the behavior and attitudes of other group members.

Once the team is formed, it may be difficult to keep group members engaged. This course will touch on techniques for getting everyone involved through team building activities. Evaluation methods for continuing improvement will also be provided.

Team Development and Sustainability Course

Although this course may also be known as 'Team Building' in some programs, the development course focuses on the growth and improvement of an existing team. Instead of being intended strictly for team leaders, this course may be offered for an entire group as hands-on training. A group of employees may attend the workshop to gain a better understanding of other members' skill sets and what they can bring to the table. Emphasis will be placed on collaboration and process improvement as a whole. Leaders in this course will gain an understanding of how to facilitate group activities in order to build trust and improve communication and problem-solving skills between team members.
