Tigard is located approximately 13 miles southeast of Portland and is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Tigard is a small city with 50,787 residents as of 2014 U.S. Census estimates. Nearly 80% of residents are Caucasian, as reported in the 2010 census. About 13% of residents are Hispanic and 7% are Asian.

Residents of this city had a median household income of $60,849 from 2010 to 2014, which was higher than the median rate for Oregon, $53,482, for that same period.

The average daily temperature in Tigard for January is 39, and for July, it is 68 degrees. Tigard experiences an average annual rainfall of approximately 39 inches.

Tigard hosts an annual Festival of Balloons each summer, as well as other seasonal and holiday events. A farmer's market is open from the end of April through October. The city provides outdoor recreation options with over 300 acres of designated and protected parks in addition to a couple of public golf courses, a skate park, bike paths and trails. One of the biggest climate controlled shopping centers in the Northwest is found in the city, as well.

The city has four proprietary institutions, and is situated within 20 miles of an additional 49 colleges and universities. Within five miles of the city, residents can take classes at Portland Community College, which has certificate and associate's degree programs for its nearly 31,000 students. Lewis & Clark College, Oregon College of Art and Craft and Northwest College-Beaverton are also found within five miles of Tigard.

Portland State University is located in downtown Portland and offers over 120 undergraduate and over 100 graduate programs. The university was ranked 16th on U.S. News & World Report's list of most innovative schools in 2016.

University of Portland, ranked 7th among regional universities in the West by U.S. News is just over ten miles from Tigard. A private Catholic university, it offers business, engineering, education and liberal arts degrees, among others, to over 4,000 graduate and undergraduate students.

Other nearby schools include Marylhurst University, Reed College, Clackamas Community College and George Fox University.

Economy and Industry

Businesses in the Tigard area include Gerber Legendary Blades, Rogers Machinery and Papé Material Handling. Tigard has numerous business parks located throughout the city. The largest employers in the city are Capital One, the combined Tigard-Tualatin School District, and Nordstrom. The city is situated in Washington County, which is considered a center for high technology with a number of electronics companies located in the region, including Tektronix, IBM and Intel. Columbia Sportswear's headquarters is in Portland and Nike's is in nearby Beaverton.
