Some of the country's top-ranked universities offer graduate training in information technology. We'll take a look at what types of master's degree and doctoral programs these schools have to offer, as well as what sets them apart. Three good information technology graduate schools include Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Syracuse University, and Brigham Young University. All of these schools were ranked among U.S. News & World Report's top national universities and offer interdisciplinary master's degree programs in information technology. Syracuse University also offers relevant doctoral programs.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, was ranked as the 39th best national university by U.S. News & World Report in 2016. It's home to the oldest technological college in the nation and was included in Computerworld magazine's top ten list of innovative information technology schools to watch for 2008.

Available interdisciplinary programs in information technology and web science include a Master of Science in Information Technology that offers core courses in database systems, software design, and technology management. Students in this program participate in a team capstone project. Although Rensselaer does not offer an information technology Ph.D., doctoral candidates in architecture, engineering, and management have the option of focusing on information technology research.

Syracuse University

In 2016, Syracuse University was ranked tied for 60th among the best national universities by U.S. News & World Report. Graduate students interested in information technology can pursue degrees in information management and information science and technology through Syracuse's School of Information Studies.

Master's degree students can complete programs in information management, information management for executives, or telecommunications and network management. Doctoral programs include the Ph.D. in Information Science and Technology, which prepares students for careers in research, teaching, and consulting, and the part-time Doctorate of Professional Studies in Information Management, which helps experienced IT professionals prepare to advance in their careers.

Brigham Young University

In 2016, U.S. News & World Report ranked Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, tied for 68th among national universities. The information technology programs at Brigham Young are accredited by ABET's computing accreditation comission and include a Master of Science in Technology with an emphasis in information technology. This program prepares students to analyze and solve information technology problems in various environments with diverse teams, all while keeping in mind global, societal, and organizational issues.
