You can study linguistics at the undergraduate and graduate levels through several colleges and universities in the U.S. Some of the top schools allow students to pursue concentrations within the field. Three well-respected universities that offer degrees in linguistics are Ohio State University, the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and Indiana University-Bloomington. Each school was ranked among the best in the country by U.S. News & World Report or The Princeton Review for 2017.

Ohio State University

School Highlight: The linguistics department at OSU is home to several research projects and institutes, such as the Buckeye Speech Corpus, the Computational Cognitive Modeling Lab, and the Nationwide Speech Project.

In 2017, U.S. News and World Report ranked Ohio State University in Columbus #54 on its list of best national universities in the United States. The Arts and Sciences school at OSU offers a bachelor's degree in linguistics. A graduate program is also available that offers different areas or concentrations of study, such as historical linguistics, phonetics, descriptive linguistics, pragmatics, phonology, computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, semantics, syntax, and sociolinguistics.

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

School Highlight: Undergraduate linguistics students at the University of Minnesota have the opportunity to receive up to $1,700 in research grants to pursue a research project through the department's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.

The Princeton Review reported that the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus was one of the best among Midwestern colleges for 2017. A bachelor's degree is available in linguistics at this Minneapolis school. The coursework includes classes on semantics, phonological theory, conversation analysis, syntactic theory, and languages of the world. At the end of the program, students complete a written thesis and research paper on a chosen subject.

Indiana University-Bloomington

School Highlight: The Linguistics Department offers a concentration in African languages and linguistics at the doctoral level.

At Indiana University-Bloomington, undergraduates can earn a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics, a Bachelor of Science in Computational Linguistics, or an interdepartmental Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Linguistics. At the graduate level, Master of Arts programs are available in linguistics and computational linguistics, and a Master of Science program is offered in computational linguistics. Ph.D. degrees and minors are offered in linguistics, computational linguistics, and African languages and linguistics. For 2017, the school was ranked #86 among national universities by U.S. News & World Report.
