The Tennessee College of Applied Technology - Knoxville (TCAT) is a 2-year, public school that specializes in career-oriented training programs. Founded in 1966, it offers traditional on-campus programs and distance learning programs to approximately 760 students per year. TCAT divides its programs into four categories - full-time, part-time, online and special industry programs. The surgical technology program is a full-time diploma program designed to prepare graduates to work within a functioning operating room.

Students in the surgical technology diploma program take courses in physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, anesthesia, surgical and medical terminology, microbiology and patient care procedures. Students learn to prepare and break down an operating room, work under the commands of licensed surgeons, prepare and maintain surgical instruments and provide assistance during surgeries. They also learn about surgical procedures and may participate in pediatric surgeries, as well as work in labor and delivery wards. Students must earn CPR certification and get a physical before starting the program.
