The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is the flagship school of the University of Tennessee system. The university enrolls more than 30,000 students in over 300 degree programs. The school has 11 colleges, including the College of Engineering. This college has eight departments, including the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The department awards undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering.
The curriculum of the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering program includes courses such as circuitry, digital systems design, electronics and electricity. Students learn about theories related to electricity, techniques used to design digital systems and methods for conducting experiments in engineering labs.
Offered with a thesis option, non-thesis project option or non-thesis, courses-only option, the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering program can be completed in 2-3 years and consists of 30 semester hours of coursework. Students can customize their plans of study by selecting a concentration in an electrical engineering specialty, such as communication theory, circuit theory and solid-state electronics. Regardless of the chosen concentration, all students are required to complete coursework in electric system components, power system planning and antenna theory. The program concludes with a final comprehensive examination.
A research oriented degree program, the Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering program is offered with the same concentrations as in the master's degree program. Students who hold bachelor's degrees are required to complete 48 semester hours or coursework; those who hold master's degrees are required to complete 24 semester hours of coursework. Advanced courses cover topics such as microwave networks, electronic systems simulation and plasma diagnostics. Over the course of the program, students conduct independent research projects and develop their doctoral dissertations.
