Film and Cinematography Programs

Georgia State University is a research-oriented university. The College of Arts and Sciences features nearly 25 degree-granting departments, schools, and institutes, one of which provides undergraduate and graduate students with an opportunity to study film and video production. The Department of Communication awards a Bachelor of Arts in film and video, a Master of Arts in film, video and digital imaging, and a Ph.D. in moving image studies.

The Bachelor of Arts in film and video program allows students to take courses from areas of film history, screenwriting, and critical studies. These courses address such topics as film and television production, postproduction, American and international film histories, film theory and film genres. Other electives can be chosen in lighting, animation, acting and computer graphics.

The Master of Arts in film, video and digital imaging offers tracks in production, screenwriting and moving image studies. In the production track, courses in the first year provide a broad discourse in film criticism, production, and theory, while those in the second year classes emphasize digital production and postproduction as well as the study of live action digital cinematography and narrative film principles. The final year culminates in a video or film project, which students defend before a thesis committee. Those in moving image studies focus on film theory, textual analysis, new media and television studies, and screenwriting students will learn about writing adaptations and short screenplays as well as study digital editing and film theory.

The Ph.D. in moving image studies provides study in media history, narrative theory, visual style and media reception. Students must also complete seminars and a dissertation.
