School Overview

Four of the top engineering schools in the country include the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and the University of California in Berkeley. Each of the schools offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a number of engineering disciplines. The following schools are considered some of the best schools for engineering with their wide array of specialties and degree programs.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA

School Highlight: This school offers a tremendous amount of research centers and laboratories, like the Center for Computational Engineering, Center for Ocean Engineering, and the Center for Computational Engineering.

MIT is ranked #1 for U.S. World & News Report's 2017 list of Best Undergraduate Engineering programs. The School of Engineering includes several departments awarding undergraduate and graduate degrees, including those devoted to the study of chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering; the school also has separate departments for aeronautical engineering, bioengineering and nuclear engineering. Graduate programs also include concentrations in polymer science and system design. MIT has partnerships with a number of fellowship programs and DuPont USA, as well as Harvard University for health sciences and technology.

Stanford University in Stanford, CA

School Highlight: Stanford's engineering department houses more than 240 faculty members, in addition to 59 labs, affiliate programs and centers that involve student research.

The Stanford School of Engineering offers a number of undergraduate and graduate programs, across nine departments, including computer science, chemical engineering and aeronautics. The university also conducts research in nanotechnology, bioengineering, information technology and sustainable energy.

University of California - Berkeley, CA

School Highlight: This school most recently accepted 8.9% of its engineering applicants.

Berkeley's School of Engineering offers programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. For undergraduates, there are a plethora of options from which to choose, such as programs in bioengineering, electrical engineering & computer sciences, industrial engineering & operations research, mechanical engineering and nuclear engineering. Students can elect to study majors and minors, joint majors, dual majors, and simultaneous degrees. Aside from master's programs, like M.Eng. and a Master of Advanced Study in Integrated Circuits, graduate students can select programs in applied science & technology, civil & environmental engineering, and materials science & engineering.

University of Texas- Austin, TX

School Highlight: This school awarded $3.7 million to over 560 graduate students, in the 2015-2016 school year.

The University of Texas at Austin is home to the Cockrell School of Engineering that offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Seven of the departments are considered top ranked and offer degrees in a wide array of disciplines, including petroleum and geosystems engineering, as well as operations research and industrial engineering. Students can also pursue dual degrees or interdisciplinary and cross-institutional degree programs.

Top Engineering Schools

Here are some other schools that also offer top engineering programs.

  • The University of Southern California is located in Los Angeles, CA, and is home to the Viterbi School of Engineering. It offers undergraduate minors, undergraduate non-degree programs, graduate degree programs, and specialized and interdisciplinary programs.
  • Ithaca, NY, offers aspiring engineering students Cornell University. Cornell awarded the first doctorates in electrical and chemical engineering in the U.S.
  • Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA, offers 12 undergraduate majors, through its College of Engineering. In addition, the school offers minors, graduate programs, study abroad options, co-ops and internships.

There are several top-ranked institutions for engineering that offer students many different majors and degree options. Some of the top options include MIT, Stanford and the University of California in Berkeley, but many other top schools also offer interdisciplinary programs, internship opportunities and graduate degrees.
