Aspiring fashion designers can enroll in formal education programs at the undergraduate or graduate level. These programs can be found within art institutes or four-year colleges and universities. The four notable schools profiled here include a renowned art and design college and fashion institute based in New York City's famous garment district. Available through the Fashion Studies Department, the fashion design program combines academic studies with hands-on experiences in design. Departmental facilities include a fashion lab equipped with sewing machines, cutting tables, dress forms, and ironing stations.

Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC

School Highlight: This is an internationally recognized school for fashion, art, and design.

The fashion design program at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) has been around since 1944. There is a fashion design program, in addition to graduate programs in fashion and textile studies in history, theory, museum practice and global fashion management. There are also certificates in programs such as ladies tailoring, and CAD for fashion design in art, leather apparel, and sustainable packaging design.

Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA

School Highlight: This school prepares students for leading roles in the global industry of fashion.

The School of Fashion at the Savannah College of Art and Design offers a BFA as well as an MFA and MA in Fashion. Additionally, the annual fashion show, SCAD, provides students with the opportunity to show their work to famous designers and the media.

Columbus College of Art and Design

School highlight: Students receive hands-on experience in construction and design.

Columbus College of Art and Design offers a BFA program in fashion design. Students design styles, develop their sewing skills, and gain experience with industry standard software. They have access to six studios, including a sewing lab, a pattern and draping lab, a drawing lab, and a computer lab. In addition to design-specific courses, students also pursue more general liberal arts studies. The program culminates in a senior fashion show.
