School Information

Operations management programs are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, but graduate programs are more commonly available. Relevant programs are available at some of the nation's best universities. Operations management programs can be found at Northwestern University, the University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina, and Carnegie Mellon University, each of which has been recognized for excellence by U.S. News & World Report for 2017. Programs in this field typically include courses in logistics, probability, statistics, and decision analysis. Students also learn about inventory and quality control, supply chain management, manufacturing, and information technology.

Northwestern University

Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management ranked seventh for production and operations management by U.S. News & World Report for 2017. Both Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) students can specialize in operations management. The MBA program prepares students for consulting or general management careers through cross-disciplinary coursework in finance, marketing, management, and organizational behavior. In the Ph.D. program, students use mathematical models to conduct research in supply chain and revenue management, distribution, logistics, and capacity planning. Northwestern University also offers an executive MBA program hosted in Miami, Florida.

University of Michigan

For 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Michigan 27th among national universities. Additionally, U.S. News & World Report considered U-M's Ross School of Business as having the fourth best undergraduate business program and the fourth best undergraduate production and operations program in the country. The University of Michigan's Bachelor of Business Administration program utilizes a three-year MERGE (Multidisciplinary Rigorous Guided Education) format. Students can also enroll in the Master of Supply Chain Management program, which utilizes the Paid Consulting Project, giving students real world, hands-on experience. The University of Michigan is home to the Tauber Institute for Global Operations, a joint project between Michigan's Ross School of Business and the College of Engineering.

University of North Carolina

For 2017, University of North Carolina's business school was ranked #16 by U.S. News & World Report. Students here can pursue an MBA with a concentration in global supply chain management, which includes courses in operations and product management, decision models, international business, and product development. The University of North Carolina is also home to an Operations Management Club that further improves student's understanding and application of supply chain functions. MBA@UNC, an online MBA program at the University of North Carolina offers weekly classes and immersion weekends.

Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon's productions and operations program was ranked #3 by U.S. News & World Report for 2017. Through the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University, students can earn a Ph.D. in Operations Management. Depending on their interests, doctoral students take advanced coursework and conduct independent research in topics such as international operations, logistics, revenue management, and shop floor control. Another degree option is an MBA with a concentration in operations management, which culminates in an interscholastic case-study competition.
