Aspiring school psychologists can find relevant undergraduate and/or graduate programs. Programs may be offered specifically in school psychology, or it may be offered as a focus within a broader psychology program. Three of the schools profiled here previously received high marks from U.S. News & World Report for the quality of their developmental psychology programs. These include the University of Minnesota in Twin Cities, University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Yale University, an Ivy League school. The fourth school, Bowie State University, was ranked within the top 30 historically black colleges and universities in the country by U.S. News & World Report for 2017.

University of Minnesota - Twin Cities in Minneapolis, MN

School Highlight: The University of Minnesota's education department is the third largest at the entire school.

The University of Minnesota in Twin Cities was the number one school for developmental psychology in 2013, according to U.S. News & World Report. A child psychology theme track is offered, in addition to one in youth studies. Education majors are offered through the university's College of Education and Human Development in early childhood education foundations, elementary education foundations, and special education. In the special education major, students will be able to acquire an Academic and Behavioral Strategist teaching license. A Ph.D. in Child Psychology is available, in addition to a M.A. in Counseling & Student Personnel Psychology. An M.A./Ed.S. is available in School Psychology, and there is also a Ph.D. program.

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, MI

School Highlight: The University of Michigan reports that its graduate education programs are regularly ranked on U.S. World & News Report's top graduate programs.

The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is a public institution that ranked as the second-best school for developmental psychology in 2013 by U.S. News & World Report. At the university's School of Education, future school counselors can pursue a combined degree program that leads to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education and Psychology. Curriculum emphasis is on the psychological approaches associated with the improvement of education for minors. In particular, graduate students may research topics in resilience and development, human development in the context of community, school and family or cognitive and learning services.

Yale University in New Haven, CT

School Highlight: At Yale University, the Ph.D. in Psychology program enrolls about 15 graduate students per year.

Yale University is a private Ivy League institution that ranked as the #11 school for developmental psychology in 2013, as designated by U.S. News & World Report. Graduate students in the developmental psychology program study the psychological change and growth associated with children, through which they learn how to help young people facing problems in school. They also study the other phases of the human lifespan. Courses in developmental psychology also coincide with coursework in cognitive, social, and clinical psychology.

Bowie State University in Bowie, MD

School Highlight: Bowie State University offers a Master of Arts in School Psychology.

At Bowie State University, students can earn a Master of Arts degree and Certificate for Advanced study (MA/CAS) in School Psychology. Most of the courses are offered in the evening in order to meet the needs of working professionals. The program includes an internship in a school setting, and graduates are prepared for the certification exam to work as school psychologists in the state of Maryland. For 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked Bowie State tied at #26 among historically black colleges and universities.
