Many schools offer master's and doctoral degree programs in anthropology, some of which allow students to specialize in a certain area of the discipline, such as bioarcheology, human evolution, or ethnology. Harvard University in Cambridge, MA

Harvard University's Alfred M. Tozzer Library holds more than 250,000 works in the field of anthropological research. The Cambridge, Massachusetts school's anthropology department offers a Master of Arts program in anthropology and Doctor of Philosophy programs in archeology and social anthropology with specializations in media and medical anthropology.

The archaeology program offers concentrations in art and religion, human evolution, bioarchaeology, and complex civilizations. Harvard's anthropology graduate programs focus on issues like globalism, gender studies, cyberspace cultures, cultural violence, and diaspora arrangement. Harvard is ranked second on U.S. News and World Report's 2017 list of top national universities.

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

The University of Michigan's anthropology department offers joint degree programs in anthropology and history and anthropology and social work. In addition to the joint Ph.D. programs, Michigan also offers doctoral degrees in anthropology with concentrations in biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, anthropological archeology, and sociocultural anthropology.

Students in the biological anthropology concentration investigate human evolution by utilizing primate studies, population genetics, nutrition, ecology, and paleontology. Those learning about linguistic anthropology focus on past and present languages. The archaeology program helps students understand the history of humans by analyzing preserved remnants of past civilizations. Sociocultural students use ethnographic techniques to compare cultures and institutions. Arizona State University in Tempe

Students at Arizona State University in Tempe have access to the school's archeological research institute, which contains more than 250,000 individual and bulk specimens. The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State (ASU) offers a Ph.D. in Anthropology degree. The program focuses on hands-on research in the field, which means that students may have the chance to travel to sites of interest around the globe.

Students in this program must choose a specialization in archaeology, bioarchaeology, evolutionary anthropology, or sociocultural anthropology. The latter usually covers museum anthropology, medical anthropology, and ecological and environmental anthropology. It is also possible to choose a formal concentration in either urbanism or complex adaptive systems science. For 2017, ASU was ranked #1 on the U.S. News & World Report list of the most innovative schools.
