Students in a truck repair certificate program learn to use a variety of basic and specialty tools, conduct diagnostic tests, interpret schematics, and follow proper safety procedures when performing engine and vehicle maintenance. Auto systems covered include diesel engines, steering and suspension, transmission, electrical and electronic, braking and drive train. Most certificates can be earned in a year or less, although 2-year programs are available. Applicants merely need a high school diploma to enroll.

Truck Repair Certificate Program

While most of these certificate programs have a general truck focus, some programs focus on large class seven and class eight trucks. Others may touch on marine and industrial applications of diesel technology. Certificate programs typically don't have a general education component, but some programs do offer courses in communications and mathematics. Employment Outlook and Salary Info

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projected a 12% increase in employment for diesel service technicians and mechanics, including truck mechanics, from 2014 to 2024. As of May 2015, truck mechanics earned a mean yearly salary of $46,110.

Continuing Education

Truck mechanics can improve their prospects for advancement by earning a voluntary certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). The ASE offers certification for specific disciplines, such as medium and heavy trucks, collision repair, brakes and advanced engine performance, among many others. Certification as a master technician or a master medium/heavy vehicle technician is available for those who pass the test. At least two years of relevant experience in the field is also required. Mechanics must re-test every five years to retain certification.

Students can earn a certificate in truck repair to begin a career as a truck mechanic. Students can make their career prospects even brighter by obtaining professional certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
