Selecting an Online Robotics School

Online education in robotics engineering isn't commonplace, but we'll examine some of the considerations you'll want to think about when trying to select a school offering online programs in the field. We'll also cover a couple of specific undergraduate and graduate degrees to give you a clearer idea of what to expect when pursing an education in robotics engineering.

Students considering online robotic engineering schools must make their decision based on several key factors. Robotics engineering programs train students to design autonomous vehicles using modeling and simulation processes. Online education programs for robotics engineering are rare; however, hybrid programs that combine on-campus and online coursework can be found usually at the master's level. Students must also weigh their specific career goals when choosing a program.

Program Availability and Type

In addition to hybrid master's degree programs in robotics engineering, students can also examine related programs. Mechanical engineering programs, for example, can include robotics-focused courses or focus areas. If a degree specifically in robotics engineering is needed, students may wish to get a bachelor's degree in a related area, then pursue a master's degree in robotics.

Career Goals and Specialization

Robotics technology is applicable to engineering, electronics and computer science. A student's choice of careers will have a great deal to do with what kind of robotics program he or she chooses. For example, a computer science master's degree program that includes an artificial intelligence concentration might be suitable for students interested in robotics intelligence.

Individuals interested in autonomous vehicles can complete a Master of Engineering in Robotics and Autonomous Vehicles.

Online Robotics Engineering Programs

Online Master's Degree in Robotics

Robotics degree programs, particularly at the master's degree level, are often intended for working adults, which means that classes are often asynchronous and do not require students to log in at any particular time. Assignments and tests have specified due dates, but students are generally allowed to complete their work and view lectures on their own schedule. Students communicate with their peers via forums or message boards, and participation requirements may apply to their grades. Although coursework varies, some courses common to the field include:

  • Modeling and simulation
  • Control system design
  • Robot dynamics and control
  • Process safety management
  • Project management

Online Programs in Robotics Engineering

Southern New Hampshire University offers students the ability to earn a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with a concentration in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence through online learning. This program, which requires 120 credit hours of coursework, trains students to create software used in robotics, artificial intelligence, video games or business intelligence. Given the nature of the program, there are some hardware and software requirements that students may want to look into before enrolling. Specific computer systems and software programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Cyber Path are necessary to complete the program's projects.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute offers an online Master of Science in Robotics Engineering program. As the first program to offer an online master's degree in robotic engineering in the nation, this program requires 10 three-credit-hour courses that are designed to build students' expertise in computer engineering, mathematics, and mechanical engineering within the context of robotics. Applicants to this program must have the following: a bachelor's degree in computer engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering and familiarity with an object-oriented programming language.

For those interested in the design of robotics, there are a few schools offering online programs that can prepare students for a career in robotics engineering. These programs may award undergraduate degrees that teach graduates the knowledge and skills needed to enter the field or graduate degrees that prepare students to advance their expertise.
