Information about Ventura

Ventura, California, has a population of 109,484, as of 2014 U.S. Census estimates, and is located about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles on the Pacific coast. About 32% of its residents are Hispanic, 60% are white and 3.4% are Asian, based on 2010 census data.

Ventura is the shortened version of the city's name: San Buenaventura. It features a variety of historical sites, including Olivas Adobe Historical Park and Mission San Buenaventura. A National Marine Sanctuary is found here, and the Los Padres National Forest is nearby.

The city is probably most well-known for its coastline, and Surfers Point and Rincon Beach provide numerous opportunities to surf or watch the professional surfers who come here from around the world.

Downtown art walks, music festivals and live theater performances are held routinely throughout the year. The city has a coastal bike path, long stretches of beach, a fishing pier and a promenade. The Channel Islands are just offshore and offer a place for whale watching, hiking, camping, diving and kayaking.

Higher Education

Ventura has five schools in its city limits, including Ventura Adult and Continuing Education and Santa Barbara and Ventura Colleges of Law. Ventura College is the largest school in the city with around 13,000 students enrolled in its certificate and associate's degree programs.

The nearby city of Oxnard hosts Oxnard College and CET-Oxnard. A campus of California State University (CSU-Channel Islands) is found in Camarillo, which is 14 miles from Ventura. This public institution is ranked 87th among regional universities in the West by U.S. News & World Report in 2016.

Thomas Aquinas College and St. John's Seminary are within reach of Ventura, while Santa Barbara, 40 miles away, is home to the University of California at Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College.

Economy and Employment

Top employers in Ventura County include Coleman Welding, Community Memorial Health System and Community Memorial Hospital, and the Sheriff's Department - Jails. Patagonia, a high-end outdoor clothing manufacturer and retailer, is headquartered in Ventura.

According to the 2012 census data, the highest sector of employment for Ventura county was retail trade with about 37,000 jobs. Health care and social assistance had nearly 32,500 jobs, while accommodation and food services had nearly 28,000 jobs.
