Web Administration Degree and Certificate Program Overviews

Oct 20, 2019

Essential Information

A two-semester certificate program in web administration provides an overview of computer science and programming, including web software and web page design. These programs prepare students to work as web administrators.

An associate degree program has coursework that focuses on web administration, but students also have the option to specialize in a certain area. Students are trained in the fundamentals of web languages, as well as web page development and design. They also gain hands-on experience working with web programming and design software.

Entrance into both types of programs only requires a high school diploma. Web administration programs may also be found as a concentration within an Internet technology or e-commerce program.

Web Administration Certificate

Web administration certificate programs may vary greatly as to which scripting languages are taught. Some certificate programs are more focused on a variety of scripting languages than other programs. Students will become familiar with both client-side and server-side software. Most certificates also provide training in website development. Courses may include:

  • Network administration
  • Basics of computer information systems
  • Cascading style sheets (CSS)
  • Extensible Markup Language (XML), HTML
  • JavaScript, PERL

Associate Degree in Web Administration

These programs may affect the nature of required courses, such as offering more business-type courses or technical courses. In addition to web administration classes, students complete general education requirements in humanities, math, science and English. Typical classes may include:

  • Apache web server management
  • Business information systems
  • Database systems
  • Interactivity on the Internet using Flash
  • Multimedia for the Internet
  • PHP programming

Popular Careers

Careers for those with associate degrees in web administration may focus on one specific aspect of the field. These might include:

  • Web administrator
  • Web database programmer
  • Web designer
  • Website manager

Employment Outlook

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that a web administrator needs only a certificate or an associate degree; however, more advanced positions may require a bachelor's degree (www.bls.gov). The BLS indicated that employment of web developers, including web administrators, would grow by 13% from 2018-2028. The mean annual wage for web developers in May 2018 was $75,580.

Continuing Education

Once individuals have a certificate in web administration, they may consider getting an associate degree. They also may be able to pass the test for the World Organization of Webmasters (WOW) Certified Apprentice Webmaster (CAW-apprentice). Other certifications are available in each scripting language studied such as HTML, UNIX and JavaScript.

Although no specific degrees are required for the various WOW certifications, those with an associate degree may have enough knowledge and experience to test for the WOW Certified Associate Webmasters (CAW). Because of the continual change in computer technologies, web administrators must continue taking refresher courses or earning certifications to keep up to date. Additionally, students can qualify for more advanced positions in the field through the completion of an information technology or computer programming bachelor's degree program.

Certificate programs in web administration provide a groundwork education in the developing, designing and maintaining web sites, while associate programs include specialization options and direct experience components through courses like Apache web server development and PHP programming.
