Potential Careers for B.S. Graduates

A Bachelor of Science degree opens the door to a vast number of career fields, such as technology, business, and education. Here we discuss a few job options, including software engineers, chief financial officers, and services consultants, and their undergraduate degree requirements.

Students interested in earning a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree can choose from a number of majors that focus on the sciences, mathematics, or technology. With so many options in these areas of study, graduates can expect to choose from a similarly diverse range of professional fields to work in, such as healthcare, finance, biology, chemistry, forensic sciences, consulting, engineering, education, and computer programming.

High-Paying Job Options

Because so many different jobs can be pursued by graduates, salaries vary widely within and across occupational fields. That said, three examples of high-paying positions one could obtain with a B.S. degree are senior software engineer, chief financial officer, and senior professional service consultant.

Senior Software Engineer

A senior software engineer is in charge of a team that designs, constructs, tests, and maintains software systems. He or she also trains employees on new products and solves any technical problems. These engineers are proficient in programming and should possess strong coding skills. Employers expect software engineers to keep abreast of the latest technology by pursuing continuing education opportunities. Some of these professionals have a master's degree, but many attain this position with a bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, or possibly even math. According to Payscale.com, senior software engineers earned an annual median salary of $107,600 as of March 2017.

Chief Financial Officer

Chief financial officers (CFOs) work within financial institutions of some kind, like a bank, credit union, or investment firm. A bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or business administration is the minimum education for work as a CFO, but many pursue graduate degrees in a related field. This executive position is responsible for financial decisions, examining risks, setting budgets, reporting financial developments, and supervising investments. The median salary for CFOs was $127,564 according to March 2017 Payscale.com data.

Senior Professional Service Consultant

Senior professional service consultants interact with clients before and after a sale. The professionals train their clients in the implementation and operation of a product and conduct any ongoing assistance as needed. Consultants need to have excellent communication skills and the ability to learn the function of new products quickly. These consultants typically need a bachelor's degree in a field befitting the company they work for. For example, a tech company will want to hire consultants that have degrees in fields such as information systems, computer science, engineering, or another technology-related field. Some employers may prefer a graduate degree. Payscale.com reports that senior professional service consultants earned a median salary of $95,109 a year, based on March 2017 data.

Although software engineers, financial officers, and professional service consultants have different job duties and educational backgrounds, they all typically need a bachelor's degree to land positions in their industries. It's clear that a wide range of other career fields, from chemistry to healthcare and beyond, require professionals with Bachelor of Science degrees.
