Technology Management MBA: Overview

Technology management is a potential MBA specialization that is available within standard MBA and Executive MBA programs. Traditional MBA programs last for two years, but some may be completed in only 18 months, often through distance learning. These programs are focused on developing leaders in the business world who not only are adept at managing current technology but also understand how to adapt to its rapid changes within the workplace. Most programs in this field aim to teach students how to advance their knowledge across multiple technologies and focus on innovation as a means of leadership. Executive MBA in Technology Management programs are typically designed specifically for professionals who have been working in their field for ten or more years.

Required Coursework

Because this is an MBA program, all students have to take a core set of advanced business courses. Specific requirements vary by school, but course topics often include marketing, accounting, finance, and management. Students must also take technology management courses, technology electives, and management electives. In Executive MBA programs, individuals may choose courses based on the field in which they currently work. Courses within the technology management curriculum may include management technology, database management, and technology innovation.

Management Technology Course

In a management technology course, students learn about managerial economics, such as supply and demand, production technology, costs, and operation of markets. Concurrently, they learn about the use of technological tools and systems to address these areas. Other topics covered include IT project management, IT business functions, and technical operations strategies.

Database Management Course

Students in a database management course will learn how to design and implement database management systems. They will also have the opportunity to study conceptual models of database systems. Course topics will include data mining, data warehousing, data models, and database architecture.

Technology Innovation Course

The technology innovation course is an elective that shows students the processes by which companies research and develop new technologies. Some of the topics covered may include development strategies, integration methods, conceptual model design, and intellectual property protection.

Admissions Requirements

Different schools require different admissions criteria. The minimum educational requirement for entrance into an MBA in Technology Management program is a bachelor's degree from a postsecondary institution. There may also be minimum GPA and/or GMAT score requirements. Some, but not all, programs require applicants to have previous professional work experience. Application materials typically include:

  • Application and fee
  • Official college transcripts
  • Official GMAT score report

Through MBA in Technology Management programs, graduate students can expand their knowledge of key business topics as well as technology-specific subjects. Admissions requirements vary by school, but students must hold a bachelor's degree in order to apply.
