Generally, accelerated master's programs in Engineering are open to persons who are already enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in a similar area and meet the relevant academic requirements. By enrolling in an accelerated program, students are able to earn both their bachelor's and master's degrees within a period of four or five years. With a master's in Engineering, students have career options that span a variety of industries such as construction, automotive and aerospace. This article will present information about the relevant programs and potential career options for a Master's in Engineering.

Overview of Accelerated Master's Programs in Engineering

B.S. with Accelerated M.S. in Engineering Management or Mechanical Engineering

This is a five-year program open to persons who are in their junior year. The student must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering or computing science and have a cumulative GPA of 3.2. If pursuing the M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, the student will complete courses such as Engineering Mechanics, Applied Thermodynamics and Fluid Dynamics. Students who choose the Engineering Management option will complete courses such as Energy Equipment Assessment, Wind Energy Technology, and Power Plant Systems.

Accelerated Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering

In this program, students who have already earned a bachelor's degree can complete a master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering in a year. This bachelor's degree must have been earned with a GPA of at least 3.0. Students will also need to submit a statement of purpose and three letters of recommendation. Some of the courses students will undertake are Cryogenics, Solar Energy, Advanced Robotics and Computational Geometry of Materials.

Accelerated M.S. in Intelligent Systems Engineering

This is a five-year program that allows students who are already enrolled in undergraduate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs to complete a master's degree as well. The student must have a 3.0 GPA as well as experience in C, Java, Python, MATLAB, Calculus I and II as well as Probability theory and/or Statistics. Students may pursue a general Intelligent Systems Engineering M.S. or choose a specific focus from the options of Bioengineering, Computer engineering, Cyber-physical systems, Environmental engineering, Molecular, and nanoscale engineering or Neuroengineering. Possible courses include Innovation and Design, Advanced Cyber-Physical Systems and Scientific Visualization.

Fast Track Accelerated Master's Degree Program in Engineering (various specializations)

In this five-year master's program, undergraduate students who a pursuing a major in Engineering or Applied Science can apply to earn a master's degree in a field of Engineering. The student must have completed 95 credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 at the time of application. The Fast Track Master's program offers specialization in the areas of Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Coastal Zone Management, Computer Engineering, Earth Remote Sensing, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, Environmental Resource Management, Environmental Science, Mechanical Engineering, Meteorology, Ocean Engineering, Oceanography, and Systems Engineering.

Career Options for a Master's Degree in Engineering

Engineering Project Manager

An engineering project manager will generally oversee a construction project from start to finish. They review proposals and manage team members to ensure work is being done according to the given standards and timelines. For this role, a Master's degree specific to the area of Engineering Management would give them all the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out this role.

Construction Management Engineer

While a construction management engineer will also oversee construction projects, they are responsible for a different aspect of the operation. They will often conduct site visits to ensure the installation of electrical systems as well as work with the construction team to ensure the project is completed in a timely manner. A Master's degree in Civil Engineering would be most helpful to this career but other fields may also be relevant.

Industrial Management Engineer

Industrial engineers are involved in the application of quality control and other evaluation measures that allow industrial systems to run efficiently. They are most interested in eliminating wasteful processes and maintaining cost-efficiency. With a Master's in Engineering, the prospective industrial engineer would have been taught how several systems work and the way in which they should be maintained.

Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical engineers design and develop mechanical and thermal devices for use in the systems that need them. They are also expected to oversee the production of the devices they have developed and conduct research to determine how existing devices can be improved. A master's degree in the specialized field of Mechanical Engineering will provide integral information regarding mechanical and thermal devices as well as how they can be introduced into existing systems.

Aerospace Engineer

Aerospace engineers design aircraft, spacecraft and missiles and are involved in assessing proposed projects to ensure they will meet quality standards. They will also inspect malfunctioning equipment to determine the root cause of the problem. Persons who wish to pursue this career will need a Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering which will cover all information related to the design of these products and the relevant quality standards.
