Accelerated Master's Degree vs. Standard Master's Degree

Typically, accelerated master's degree students will take many of the same courses as those enrolled in a standard program. Accelerated Master's Degrees in New York City

New York University Master of Social Work

NYU offers an accelerated Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. Students begin the program in the spring semester, and work throughout the summer to complete the required coursework in 16 months. Students can expect to take courses in human behavior, group practice, and social policy. In addition, MSW students must complete four social work practicum courses. Applicants should complete the online application, and expect to provide transcripts, three references, a resume, and a statement of purpose.

New York Medical College Master of Science in Basic Medical Sciences

Students can pursue an accelerated M.S. in Basic Medical Sciences through a program offered at New York Medical College. This program can be completed in one year. It allows students to meet medical school pre-requisites, in order to apply for further graduate study. Students may benefit from guaranteed interview agreements with several medical schools. Those who are applying should plan to submit MCAT scores, transcripts, and engage in an interview. Research or clinical experience is preferred.

Columbia University Nursing Master's Direct Entry

At Columbia University, students with a bachelor's degree in an area other than nursing can seek an accelerated direct-entry master's degree to enter the nursing field. The program can be completed in 15 months. Students will take classes in physical assessment, health promotion, and other nursing topics, and participate in clinical experiences. Students will be able to seek their RN license after graduation, and may qualify to move directly into a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. Candidates should anticipate providing transcripts, written and video essays, three recommendations, and a resume. Undergraduate coursework requirements include anatomy, physiology, and statistics.

Fordham University Master of Science in Education

Fordham University provides a program entitled the Accelerated Master's Program in Educational Leadership (AMPEL). Courses start in July, and run on weekends throughout the academic year. Students complete the course of study in one year. Coursework might include school finance and fundamentals of educational supervision. Those who complete an internship as well as the coursework are eligible for school-based leader certification. Networking opportunities with the New York City Department of Education are built into this program. Those who apply must be teachers or school counselors with two years of experience and an endorsement from their current principal. They should also expect to provide transcripts and GRE or MAT scores; and to sit for an interview.

Adelphi University Master of Business Administration

Students who wish to earn a Master of Business Administration (MBA) can do so through Adelphi University's 17-month program. Classes are offered on Saturdays. In addition, students are expected to take online instructional classes as well. Courses might include corporate finance and entrepreneurship. Those who are applying should plan to provide transcripts, a resume demonstrating four years of business experience, an essay, and a letter of recommendation.
