Accelerated MSN Programs in NY

A number of schools in New York offer accelerated graduate nursing programs. This article will provide an overview of those programs, as well as the general admission requirements.

The accelerated master's degree programs in nursing that are offered by New York schools may be designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in nursing as well as those who don't. New York Schools With Accelerated Master's Degree Programs in Nursing

Mercy College - School of Health and Natural Sciences

Mercy College offers a Master of Science in Nursing Education that students can take part-time, full-time or online. The 36-credit accelerated master's program starts in the fall and can be completed in 15 months. This program will allow students to transfer up to six credits from another graduate program as long as they were taken no more than five years prior to seeking admission. Some of the course topics that are included in this program aimed at future faculty members are health policy, diversity and instructional strategies.

Columbia University - School of Nursing

The 15-month, Masters Direct Entry program offered by Columbia University is designed for students without a background in nursing. The program focuses on evidence-based nursing and has 69 credits' worth of course materials. Students can expect to learn topics like pharmacology and nursing leadership, as well as care coordination, and this curriculum can lead directly into a related doctoral degree program. When enrolled in this program, students will also get practical experience in a variety of clinical environments.

Daemen College

At Daemen College, students without an undergraduate degree in nursing can pursue an accelerated master's degree in nursing. Those with a nursing undergraduate degree can have access to an accelerated Master of Science as an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP). The AGPCNP program has both part-time and full-term enrollment options. A few of the topics that can be covered when enrolled in either program include nursing informatics, advanced health assessment, advanced practice nursing, and qualitative research.

University of Rochester - School of Nursing

Students without a nursing undergraduate degree can pursue an accelerated program at the University of Rochester that includes both a bachelor's and a master's degree. While students can earn a bachelor's degree in a year, the entire program can take up to four years to complete. Requirements include a year of clinical experience in the student's specialty that must be completed before starting the graduate portion of the program. Before beginning the accelerated program, students must take the prerequisite courses that the school provides online.

General Admission Requirements for New York-Based Accelerated Master's Programs in Nursing

In order to gain admission to the New York schools that offer accelerated master's degree programs in nursing, applicants must have an undergraduate degree. Persons without an undergraduate degree in nursing may need to take some prerequisite courses like microbiology, human anatomy, and nutrition or prove their competence in a nursing-related area. Some of these accelerated master's programs may require a minimum GPA of 3.0. When applying to the programs, prospective students may need to submit school transcripts, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, a current resume, passing scores on a GRE, and a writing sample.

In New York, accelerated master's degree programs may incorporate an accelerated bachelor's degree and cover topics such as health policy, pharmacology and health assessment. On average, the programs can be completed within 15 months but a few may take as long as four years, depending on your background.
