The state of Arizona has a simple process for people hoping to become substitute teachers, and it only requires them to have a bachelor's degree and to complete an application. No testing is required to become a substitute in Arizona.

Step 1: Earn a Bachelor's Degree

Before a student can apply for their substitute teaching certificate, they need to graduate from an approved, accredited bachelor's degree program. This program can be in any subject area, though if a student is planning on becoming a substitute teacher, educational courses might be helpful. There are multiple degree programs offered in Arizona that can prepare students to become teachers at any grade level. While each program is slightly different, some of the commonly offered courses include:

  • Introduction to Serving Language Learners
  • Cultural Diversity in Education
  • Literacy, Evidence-Based Practices, and Language Arts
  • Science and Evidence-Based Practices

Most of these programs require participants to complete internships in classrooms in order to gain experience working with students.

Step 2: Complete the Certification Application

There are no tests required for substitute certification in Arizona at this time, so the next step for future substitutes is to fill out an Application for Certification. This form can be found on the Arizona Department of Education website, and it requires basic information from the applicant that includes name, social security number, address, and answers to some basic background questions. The application will then run through a list of teaching certificates, asking applicants to check the ones they have earned. The $60 application fee should be submitted with the application. Finally, future substitutes will fill out their educational information.

Applicants will need to pay $60 for every endorsement area. Official transcripts also must be submitted.

Step 3: Get Fingerprinted

Finally, substitute teachers will need to obtain a Fingerprint Clearance Card. This can either be done by applying online through Fieldprint or by requesting a packet through the mail. Fingerprints will be submitted to the state and the results from the background check will also be provided to the Arizona Department of Education. Once an applicant has passed the background check, they will be eligible for their substitute teaching certificate.
