What Is an Assistant Living Facility Manager?

An assistant living facility manager is a type of medical and health services manager. Similar to a nursing home administrator, individuals in the assistant living facility manager position are typically tasked with overseeing the daily operations of a facility. Specific responsibilities include hiring workers, making staff schedules, supervising employee activities and fostering an engaging and encouraging atmosphere.

Managers' duties also include planning budgets, managing billing and spending and working with supervisors within the facility to help meet departmental goals. They are typically tasked with ensuring the building is regularly maintained and meets all regulations. Managers may also attend meetings with investors or board members.

Required Education

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employers hiring medical and health services managers typically look for applicants to hold at least a bachelor's degree; however, some employees may show greater consideration to applicants with master's degrees. Commonly preferred degree fields include those focused on public health administration, business management or health management. Candidates with an educational background in nursing are also preferred.

Required Skills

Medical and health services managers require a variety of skills to properly oversee a facility. Leadership and management skills are necessary to supervise staff members and ensure operations run efficiently. Managers should also possess communication and interpersonal skills to effectively discuss objectives and goals with employees and maintain positive relationships with facility residents and family members.

Organization skills and attention to detail are needed to maintain work, food, building repair, billing and other schedules. Depending on the requirements of the care facility, technical skills may be needed to manage electronic health record (EHR) systems.

Career Outlook and Salary

The BLS reports that career opportunities for all managers of medical and health services are expected to grow 20%, or much faster than average, between 2016 and 2026. The greater consideration will likely be given to job candidates who have experience with IT systems focused on healthcare or possess a master's degree in health administration.

According to Payscale.com, as of January 2019, assisted living managers earned an average salary of $46,579 per year. Entry-level managers with five or fewer years of experience typically earn an average total compensation (including overtime pay, tips and bonuses) of $37,000, while more experienced managers with 10-20 years of experience earn about $47,000.
