Career Definition of an Athletic Compliance Coordinator

An athletic compliance coordinator is responsible for monitoring rules and for regulation enforcement in collegiate athletic departments. They revise rules and guidelines as necessary and educate the athletics department regarding these changes. They also make sure athletic scholarships are given in accordance with academic and athletic guidelines. Athletic compliance coordinators work within the athletic department and the university as a whole to ensure they are in compliance with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) policies and regulations. They work with student athletes, athletic administrators, coaching staff, and academic administrators within the university system.

In addition to maintaining compliance of athletic rules and regulations, athletic compliance coordinators will revise these rules as necessary. They work with coaches and staff to educate them about NCAA policies and procedures. They monitor the recruitment of student athletes from high schools into their university system. They also supervise activities leading up to and on game days. Athletic compliance coordinators often oversee athlete awards, scholarships, penalties, and perks. When necessary, they must investigate violations to those policies and procedures. They must report any violations to the appropriate officials and implement any necessary sanctions.

Education

Athletic compliance coordinators typically have a bachelor's degree, although a master's degree in a related field or a J.D. may be preferred by some employers. They should have experience in the collegiate athletic system that they can bring to the job. Athletic compliance coordinators must understand NCAA rules and regulations and stay abreast of any changes or updates to those regulations. In addition, they need to stay on top of their university's own regulations regarding athletics and academic performance. Athletic compliance coordinators often work under the athletic compliance director and answer to university administrators and NCAA staff.

Skills

Athletic compliance coordinators need to be detail oriented and able to multi-task. They must have excellent oral and written communication skills. It is not uncommon for them to interact with a wide range of people, from student athletes to academic administrators. Athletic compliance coordinators maintain a standard schedule in an office environment but may also work nights and weekends at athletic events. They may work longer hours during peak athletic seasons and less hours during the off season.
