Schools in Texas with Athletic Training Graduate Programs

University of Houston

The University of Houston offers an entry-level Master of Athletic Training (MAT) degree program. The program starts in the summer and can be completed in 2 full years. Students in the program receive 6 different clinical education experiences throughout the program for plenty of hands-on learning. In order to graduate, students in the program are expected to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and submit at least 1 Clinical Education Case Study to a conference or journal in the field of athletic training.

Texas State University

Texas State University in San Marcos, has a Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) with a thesis and non-thesis option. Licensed athletic trainers are the target students of this program since the school offers a curriculum which can help them further hone their skills and knowledge, for example, in courses like the Special Topics in Athletic Training as well as the Independent Study in Athletic Training. The thesis option requires 34 credit hours, including the thesis, while the non-thesis option requires 37 credit hours. Students in both programs are still required to pass a comprehensive examination.

Texas Tech University

Texas Tech University in Lubbock provides a 2-year, MAT program for interested students. The program begins in the summer and includes 4 different clinical experiences for experiential learning. Students are also trained in research and may choose an optional practicum for independent study. Students have access to laboratories to practice their skills and are prepared for the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC) exam after graduation.

The University of Texas at Arlington

Students can pursue a 2-year, MSAT from the University of Texas at Arlington. It is an entry-level professional program that follows a cohort-learning model and prepares students for the BOC exam. This program offers unique emergency medicine electives and a wide range of research opportunities in the field of sports medicine. Students in the program must complete a research project and a total of at least 1,270 clinical hours throughout the program's 6 clinical rotations.

Tarleton State University

Tarleton State University in Stephenville also offers an entry-level, 2-year MSAT, as well as an accelerated dual Bachelor of Science (BS) in Kinesiology/MSAT that can be completed in 5 years. According to the school's website, the MSAT program only admits 12 students annually, and therefore, offers small class sizes. The program places a unique emphasis on service and leadership with coursework, service opportunities and even a chance to study abroad. Students also gain plenty of hands-on learning experience through clinical experiences in a variety of settings.
