A data entry clerk's responsibility is to enter data gleaned from sources such as paper documentation or telephone conversations into computer systems. This is usually an entry-level job and is often available as remote work. Employers may or may not specify requirements on education and previous experience, and in most cases, a high-school degree should be sufficient to get you through. Computer skills, particularly MS Office, an analytical mind, excellent oral and written comprehension, ability to compile and produce accurate summaries of data, self-motivation, and time management are some of the qualities expected of prospective candidates.

For medical abstractor positions, consider completing a certification such as that of a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
