Career Information for Work-from-Home Data Entry Professionals

Data Entry Clerk

A data entry clerk's responsibility is to enter data gleaned from sources such as paper documentation or telephone conversations into computer systems. This is usually an entry-level job and is often available as remote work. Employers may or may not specify requirements on education and previous experience, and in most cases, a high-school degree should be sufficient to get you through. Computer skills, particularly MS Office, an analytical mind, excellent oral and written comprehension, ability to compile and produce accurate summaries of data, self-motivation, and time management are some of the qualities expected of prospective candidates.

Data Abstractor

As a data abstractor, you will scan through records for key information which you will selectively extract and enter into an electronic system. A vast number of abstractor positions are available in the medical field and can be 100% work-from-home jobs. Once again, the education requirements are variable with some employers requiring a degree while others are okay with any combination of relevant education or experience. For medical abstractor positions, consider completing a certification such as that of a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Licensed nurses are also good candidates for the role of a medical abstractor.

The job of an accountant involves recording accounting data such as credits and debits, producing reports, managing inventory, inspecting for errors, and reconciling discrepancies. Today, many accounting positions are available as work-from-home jobs, albeit at an experienced level. Although education requirements are not uniform across employers, you will stand an advantage if you have some university education with accounting coursework. For a work-from-home position, previous work experience of 2 to 5 years may be expected.

Insurance Claims Examiner

Insurance claims examiners document and assess losses and damages to property for an insurance agency and generate reports estimating costs and extent of coverage while maintaining communication with various stakeholders. Insurance claims examiners may work out of a home office, however, they could be required to travel within their area to perform inspections. The minimum educational requirement to take up this job as a remote worker is a high-school diploma or GED. You may also need to show experience in customer service and property claims adjustment, as well as hold a valid adjuster's license.

Data Manager

The role of a data manager involves overseeing the ensemble of data processes in an organization, including data entry, data collection, flow of data within the organization, and framing of policies. This is a position at a fairly high level and a great option for those who have accumulated years of experience in data entry and related occupations. The education requirements for a data manager may include holding a bachelor's degree in a field related to the project. For instance, if the project is based on clinical trials, you may be required to hold a pharmacy degree or something similar.
